The map

Reading your map

Example map with numbered checkpoints and points values
  • Green boxes are checkpoints, numbered so you can find them in the app
  • The yellow number next to some is extra points: higher value, usually further away
  • The circle marks the exact spot; get within about 5 metres and the app collects it
  • S is the start and F the finish
  • Take a few minutes at registration to plan: the best scores come from a smart loop, not the most running

Example from a past event. Your Halifax map is handed out on the night.

The app

Get iOrienteering. It's free.

  1. Install it at homeTap your phone's button above, or search "iOrienteering" in the App Store or Google Play. Install it before the night: venue signal can be patchy.
  2. Open it onceWhen it asks to use your location, say yes ("While using the app" is fine). That is how it knows you have reached a checkpoint.
  3. Charge your phoneAn hour of GPS uses battery. Come fully charged, and bring a power bank if your phone is old.
  4. We do the restAt registration we load the night's course onto your phone with you and show you how it works. No account to set up before you come.

Your GPS tracker

We know where you are

At registration we give you one of our GPS trackers. Keep it in a pocket for the whole hour. Our team watches every runner live from Dukes, and your family and friends can follow you on the live map while the round is on. Hand it back when you finish (a lost tracker costs £175, see the terms).
